1. Devide students into pairs or learning groups of 2.
Each group needs to make sure they have the following materials:

* Lab worksheets
* A bag of mini Smarties
* Markers or crayons
* Poster paper

2. Prepare students for the activity by discussing fractions and asking questions such as:

-What is a fraction?
-How are fractions made?

3. Give directions. Explain the worsheets and go through the lab.

4. Ask the students for any questions.

Activity

1.Sort the Smarties according to color.

2. Create fractions out of the color (part) and amount of Smarties (whole).

BATTERY HENS. Yes Or No?

What do you think about hens being kept in cages? Do you think they should grow up in cages? Or just live inside but but allowed to walk around a little bit?

Or do you think they should be raised outside and treated nicely? Here is some information:

This is what happens to them and they live through in their day to day life:

Life In The Cages:

The Battery Hen spends all her laying life in a cage crammed in with three and up to seven other birds. She stands for life on a space smaller than this leaflet. Her only exit is to the slaughterhouse.
Cages are kept in huge artificially lit sheds. The hen stands on thin sloping wire - her feet and legs crippled. She cannot perch, preen, scratch in the dirt, dust-bathe, spread her wings, or escape to a quiet place to lay an egg - all activities known to be extremely important to the behavioural needs of a hen.

Stressed and crowded hens peck at each other. Therefore farmers cut off a third of the chicken's beak with a hot wire guillotine. This causes severe pain at the time and the chicken may die of shock. Also the nerves in the beak stump are still active and the hen suffers pain for months, perhaps years afterwards. Many have great difficulty eating for the rest of their lives.

How people are trying to stop this:

SAFE's campaign against battery cages spanning over 20 years is paying off, rejoices SAFE campaign director Hans Kriek. "SAFE has ensured a greater nationwide awareness of the cruelty behind producing battery eggs. It has resulted in dramatic consumer boycotts of caged eggs. It has prompted a demand for alternative systems that offer better welfare conditions for the birds and most recently, industry leaders have bowed to SAFE's pressure. We are achieving success!"

How to look after our "maybe" class budgie.

hi everyone. Since that budgie was in our class today, and was really hungry, I have decided to do a post on how to look after pet budgie's, just in case we keep it! I am also going to start a poll on what we can name budge, and I will also put some cool names on=]!!!.

Budgerigar Diet Information:

Budgies in the wild eat both ripe and unripe seeds. The reason for the consumption of unripe seeds is that they carry more assimilable lysine. You can, in part, duplicate this situation at home with your pet budgie by giving him/her grass seeds from your gardens. Wild budgerigars feed upon grass seeds; mainly on the ripening seeds of the Australian Spinifex and the Mitchell grass which they supplement on a daily basis with Eucalyptus leaves, buds and bark. They sometimes also feed on a few other plants depending on where they are.The reason for this is that wild budgies are nomadic and don't always come across the same vegetation every day. Territorial birds diets are fixed by what is available in their territory but the budgie has to adapt and this is part of what has made it such a popular pet. Anywhere in the world it's possible to find a diet budgies can exist on.

Information:

No matter what we do for our pet bird, the inside of the bird cage can never even come close to a pet bird’s natural environment. No matter what kind of pet bird you have, in the wild it would never have seen anything like the kind of bird toy you usually find in most pet stores these days.

Smooth blocks and balls in unfamiliar geometric shapes made in carpenters workshops from woods that don't exist in the wild bird’s natural habitat can’t be ideal for any cage bird. To top it off they’re then dipped in unnatural (and sometimes toxic) chemical dyes. How can they be healthy items for inclusion in a bird cage?

Do your bird a favor. No matter what kind of pet bird you have - try to get hold of some of the tree branches or leaves it would normally come across in nature. Just watching your bird enjoy itself will reward you.

Housing:

Budgies can be housed indoors in a large wire cage with a plastic base or outdoors in a purpose-built aviary. The cage should have some horizontal bars on it to allow climbing – this means many round cages are unsuitable. Bars should be no wider than 12mm apart to prevent escape. Kept outdoors, your aviary should allow room for the birds to fly around properly. Budgies kept indoors will need to be let out of their cage daily to exercise – make sure you keep all doors and windows closed when you do this. Covering the cage with a cloth at night will encourage your Budgie to settle down for sleep.

You should provide a bath for your bird, either fixed to the outside of the cage or a shallow bowl placed inside the cage – although some birds may prefer to be sprayed with tepid water instead.

The cage should also contain plenty of toys to keep your Budgie amused, particularly if it is kept on its own.

Exercise & Entertainment:
Budgies are intelligent and inquisitive birds that enjoy playing and climbing. Toys are essential to stimulate them mentally and physically – especially important for birds kept on their own. Budgies can also be taught to mimic sounds and talk. If they hear the same words repeatedly from the same person they may pick them up and begin mimicking the words or phrases. A solitary bird will need more attention and affection than a pair or group and should be handled every day.

Handling:
With patience, Budgies can become quite tame although it is essential they are trained from an early age, and by one person only. The first step is to get the bird used to being stroked inside its cage – use a stick or perch, not your hands. Start by gently stroking its chest a couple of times a day, then encourage it to jump onto the stick. Next, repeat the whole process through the door of the cage rather than the bars. Finally, repeat again, using your hands this time instead of the stick. This is a gradual process that may take several weeks but usually works in the end.

To pick up your Budgie, ensure your palm covers its back and wings while your middle and index finger surround the bird’s neck. Be gentle – Budgies will bite if they feel stressed. If catching an aviary bird use a padded rim net and never try to catch it in mid flight - always wait until it is perched safely.

Breeding:
Budgies can be mated from about a year old and will produce a clutch of 4-6 eggs in about 18-21 days. As with all pets, breeding Budgies requires much commitment of time and effort. It is recommended that you therefore seek expert advice and do appropriate research before considering keeping a breeding pair and only if you’re certain you can find good homes for the babies.

A Must Read Disaster Down My Street!

Hi everyone. today, according to my mum the weirdest thing happened. you may hear about this before published in the paper (if it is published)

My mum had just opened the front door, when she heard the sirens of a police car in hot pursuit of the sports car. We live near the end of our street, and when the sports car went past our house it was still going fast. Then, moments later, my mum heard the screeching of brakes and a humongous thud coming from down the road. It went colliding into a flash garage that had been built there and now it has a dent in the side from that car. If that car had gone like a meter to the left it would have plunged down 10 meters of galley! Whoever came down our street didn't know it was a no exit street! I wonder why he was speeding away???

Two policeman jumped out of the car, but she didn't see the person who was driving (damn). A bit later another police car arrived. Following that a man took photos of the scene and then he left. Another guy was also dusting something like a scene examination.
IT SOUNDS SCARY.

Then her and our neighbors went and checked it out.
If I was there I would have been jumping right into the fun. I loooooove action.

But in the end, no one got hurt! ( I'm pretty sure they didn't because they didn't call an ambulance my mum said)

Ooh noooooo! One of our best and most talented Rugby players "Daniel Carter" will NOT be playing Rugby for New Zealand anymore! He has confirmed he will take his six month sabbatical at Perpignan in France!!!
The All Black pivot signed a contract earlier this month with the NZRU that will keep him in the country until the 2011 World Cup but the deal allows him to take a six month sabbatical.

Did you guys know that he ( Daniel Carter) is the Highest payed Rugby star in the world!!! He must be absolutely rich!

Just if none of you know who he is (which in unlikely) I will put on a few photos of him in action!

Matariki (the Pleiades)

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars known as the Pleiades. When it rises in the north-eastern skies in late May or early June, it signals to Māori that the New Year will begin. In one tradition, Matariki is the mother surrounded by her six daughters, Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-a-rangi and Ururangi.

What is Matariki?
Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year.

When is the Maori New Year?
The Maori new year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June. This next occurs on 5 June 2008.

What does Matariki mean?

Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

How is Matariki celebrated?

Matariki was the optimum time for new harvests, and ceremonial offerings to the land-based gods Rongo, Uenuku and Whiro to ensure good crops for the coming year. According to Greek myth, the Pleiades are the seven daughters of Pleione and Atlas – Electra, Maia, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Asterope and Merope. While wandering through the woods one day, they were spied by Orion, who gave chase. To save them from Orion’s dishonorable intentions, Zeus transformed them into stars and placed them in the sky. A number of ancient temples on the Acropolis in Athens face the direction where the Pleiades rise.

AWESOME DUBAI PALM ISLANDS!!!

hi. my uncle (Helvetian) sent me some pictures of these reeealy interesting palm islands in Dubai where I think Gnome comes from??? they are like really cool and they are basically these massive fern/ palm thing off the side of Dubai , that looks like skulls and they are building houses and a massive city/ town out there!!! it's really scary, and apparently you can see them from space!!! here is a photo that Helvetian sent me-

here is some more info on palm islands in Dubai in my own words: The palm islands are artificial islands located off the coast of The United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf in Dubai.
There are two of these islands made in Dubai and they are made of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand!!! thats alot aye!
All of this has been built in the last 5 years!!!
These are the largest artificial islands in the world and can be seen from space!!!

Annoying Add's!!!

Ok. Hi. Today I was watching tv while on the computer, and I heard myself singing along to some song I was sure I had never heard. It was the "Our house in the middle of our street" add. Then I thought to myself- hang on, why am I singing this. I waited to the next add and then It was some Anz add. I also knew all the words/script to this song!!! i also knew the words for the next couple of add's!!! Isn't it weird how, when you have seen an add lots of times and when you hear a little theme song with it you automatically remember it for like ever. Or is it just my bad habit of watching tv lots??? So I decided to add some pictures and write some words to see if you knew as many Tv words as me:

Nelson Mandela

For the project when we had to choose a famous person who changed the world in some way I chose Nelson Mandela. I chose him because when he lived in South Africa white people used to have rules against black people saying that they got less rights. He disagreed with that so he stood up for his people and for that, he went to jail for 36 years!!!. Here is a photo of him:

Is There Life On Mars?

Hi. i'm Kitty Milo and i wanted to know "is there life on mars?". many people have been wondering for years and scientists have been searching for evidence and trying to find out if life exists on mars.
Here is some evidence supporting that life does exist on mars:
TheseTiny egg-shaped or tubular features were found in a Mars meteorite ALH84001. These features resemble many bacteria on Earth and were thus interpreted as fossils of ancient Martian life. Most of the fossils are between 20 and 100 nanometers in diameter, smaller than any normal bacteria on Earth. Recent evidence, however, suggests that there do exist on Earth organisms of this size dubbed "nanobacteria". There is still debate as to whether or not Earth nanobacteria have been proven to be life. If nanobacteria are in fact living organisms, the finding of these features in ALH84001 is good evidence for past life on Mars.

Carbonate is a type of rock formed from liquid water and carbon dioxide gas. Carbonate can be formed inorganically, without the help of life. But on earth, life often helps in the formation of carbonate. The carbonate found in the Martian meteorite ALH84001 was surrounded by microscopic features interpreted as fossils by the scientists studying the meteorite. Though this finding in itself is inconclusive as to the presence of life, it does indicate that liquid water was once present on Mars. !!!!!interesting. here is a photo of that meteorite:

he first questions that come to mind in order to demonstrate such possible intention are these:

Did the pyramid builders have a keen interest in the stars? Yes they did.
Do the pyramids have astronomical qualities in their design? Yes they do.
Is there a feature in the pyramids that links them to Orion's belt? Yes there is (the southern shaft from the King's Chamber in the Great Pyramid).
Are there contemporary or near-contemporary texts which are associated to pyramids in that region and which speak of a link with Orion? Yes, there are.
Did the ancient Egyptians imagine the pyramids to be 'stars'? Yes (the Zawyat al Aryan pyramid was called 'The Pyramid of Nebka is a star" and the Abu Ruwash pyramid was called "The Pyramid of Djedefre is a Sehed Star". Also the 'soul' (Ba) in ancient Egypt was equated to a 'star', and several pyramids bear 'soul names', such as "The Pyramid of Neferirkare has become a Ba (Soul)" and "The Ba (Soul) of Sahure Gleams".

From the above we must conclude that there is much that suggests a deliberate intention to represent Orion's belt at Giza.

do pyrimads excist on mars???

hi. im kitty milo. im very very interested in investigating things and researching and finding information. so i decided to research on mars and the pyrimads on mars. well first of all this is what mars looks like:

yes, it's very cool aye? it's a red planet and is named after the roman god of war. i wont go into facts about mars because then we could be here all day.
what i want to know is- how did the pyramids of giza get where they are, why are they there, who built them, and why are they positioned exactly the same as orion's belt??? if you dont have ANY idea what the pyrimads of giza are then here is a photo:

apparently, according to science and experiments and the internet if you look at the pyramids of giza from the top, they are in the same position as orions belt. if you dont know what orions belt is then it's like a line of stars at night and here is a picture:

A thing that I'm really super interested in is world heritage sites... I think they're beautiful and amazing and complicated and original and there's so many other words to describe them.

The V8 Supercars Are Coming To HamiltON!!!!!

soon, one of hamilton's biggest events, the v8's will be coming to hamilton.
do you think that the v8's are a good idea for hamilton. im going to write the good and bad points of the v8's in hamilton and room 5 can decide if we think the v8's are good.!!!!!!!!

Good Points:

-people who buy tickets for the v8's,
that money will go towards hamilton,
improving our city and making it a better
place.
- the v8's will focus media
attention on hamilton
-it gives people from hamilton a chance
to engage with people from other cities.
-it will promote hamilton because if people
come here they will see what a great place it
really is.
-more and more people will come back each year
therefore increasing our money we get
(we have the v8's in hamilton for 8 years)
- it's forcing hamilton buisnesses such as hotels, motels resturants, places like that to up their game to deal with the amount of people that are coming into hamilton
- the caterers could enjoy their time doing what they love doing (cooking)
-it shows people that YES hamilton can host big events like this and YES we are prepared for it, that's if we host it well of course.
- it entertains people
- people that compete from New Zealand wouldn't have to pay all the costs for taking their cars over seas for the v8's races.
- it brings people together from all over new zealand for a positive, fun, family event, not s big tragerdy.
- and last of all, it makes speeding and racing in cars controlled.

Bad Points:
- all the cars from everone who is coming to the v8 races would cause looooooooooooooooots of trafic therefore making it unsafe and all the time spent waiting in traffic could be spent in more beneficial ways
- the v8 event attracts boy racers
- hamilton is already running out of water, and with all the extra people coming into hamilton think how much less water we would have because people would be drinking out of taps and having showers and baths.
-all this time and effort and work that is put into setting up for the v8's , and the v8's will only be going for a weekend, so there's all that 2 months wasted.
-people who come to hamilton from other cities might do more tagging and wreck trees or burgal somewhere.
-with all these cars it would cause losts of pollution.
- the amount of rubbish that will be thrown everywhere from beer bottles, chippie packets and food that will be sold at the v8's racing.
- once the v8's are over just like that it will take the workers ages to get everything down .
-the caterers that will be serving food, the could get stressed making the v8's a stressful time for them.
- some people who would absolutely love to go to the v8's couldn't go to them because they couldn't afford it but some people who hate the v8's and think it's pointless might be going because they can afford it.
- the people actually DRIVING the v8 cars could crash and get seriouslly injured or hurt. ( but they are proffesionals)
- and last of all, some people go other places in the holidays like to a camp or visit relatives and might not have known that the v8's were on that holiday so it could intefere with other plans and therefore you would miss out.!!!!!!

so now that you have seen both sides, good and bad what do you think? do you think that the v8's is a good event for hamilton to host?

muahahahahahah! tomorrow on the first of april we will be able to pull pranks and jokes to our families! I've got afew that you could use and a website.

1. if you look on the bottom of you mouse you will see an optical eye that flashes. put a sticky note of paper on it and the mouse will automatically not be able to move. remember to write 'april fools' on the piece of paper.
2. Use a pin to make a few small holes in a plastic disposable cup. Offer a drink to the victim and watch while the liquid dribbles out onto their shirt!
3.Find a scrap of cloth. Place a dollar on the floor and stay nearby. When the victim comes by and bends down to pick up the dollar, rip the cloth loudly. Most people will reach back to see if they ripped their pants. One of the original classic April Fool's pranks of all time!

i think we need a laptop in our class.
it would defenitely help us learn because we could do skype and talk to people and ask them our questions while at the same time you could see them, even if they were at the other side of the world! we could do research on firefox, or internet explorer by typing in the key points of the subject you would like to learn about and get information fast. we could also learn how to install other software fast, that some computers dont install. they are portable and flash. we could take them with us on a class trip in a carry bag and jot down anything we learn on microsoft word and save it to a document. that is why i think it would help us learn and is good for our class. can we have a laptop please?

in our class we have to prove that we need a certain type of technology and say why we would use it, explain how it would help us learn, then record it onto a camera and send it to the council and if they think we really do need it to help us to learn then they will buy it- for us! its pretty radical!
i think our class could and should have lots more technology then we already do to help us learn more effectively, so i am going to prove why...
pda phones:
pda phones are a small, portable, light and convinient piece of technology. they have the same features as computers, but lots more and it is just like a computer, laptop, video camera, telephone/cellphone,digital camera all in one. the reason i think that is because they can access the same programms as computers, are just as portable as laptops but dont have to fold, can record anything we want like video cameras, take photos just like digital cameras,talk to friends on the phone AND we can see the time. it also has the basic features like stopwatch ,calendars alarm clocks and calculators. it is a brilliant piece of technology.
i think it would help us learn more effectively because we could research much more quickly than having to access the computer, we could take it with us on a field trip to record information we couldnt remember. we could type in writing or notes into the microsoft words and save it instead of writing on paper. we could also have a audioconference on the phone and we could discover many more things. that is why i think we need a pda phone.

he is a cuit, intelligent, orange and white, 9 year old curious cat born on the 19th of july 1996. (made up) he has been in my family for 10 years and throughout the years he has become my best friend, best pet most loved and worshiped creature of the family. he doesnt hunt or kill any other creatures and makes friends with some of the neighbours cats. but he does get bullied by others.
